intervention_w200Interfering in the life of a friend or family member can be risky, but if an addiction is threatening their health you can’t afford to keep quiet.

Intervening in the life of an adult – whether they’re a family member or close friend – is tricky business. You’re afraid of overstepping, of butting in, of putting your nose where it doesn’t belong. You run the risk of alienating the very person you’re trying to help. But if someone is putting their health or life at risk, it’s time to get involved.

Moving Toward Legal Marijuana?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

legalpot_w200Some Californians see pot as a cash crop and the key to the state’s considerable financial woes. But will legalization lead to a costly new addiction problem?

As drug abuse continues to be a problem that affects all ages and socio-economic groups, one drug is garnering growing support for legalization and making it more readily accessible.

Three states — Minnesota, New Hampshire and Rhode Island — have made strides in recent weeks toward legalizing medical marijuana, according to CBSNews.com. Meanwhile, cash-strapped California is taking it a step further, with Gov. Family on bikes outdoors smilingBlue eyes or a talent for sports can be genetically transmitted, but a predisposition for depression, drug abuse or alcoholism can also be passed through the genes.

Genetics aren’t inherently good or bad. We are a complex mix of those who went before us, including many good and not-so-good traits. You may love that you inherited your dad’s curly hair and curse your luck at getting your mom’s ample thighs. A risk of mental health issues and addictions can also be transmitted through the genes.

Harold’s Blog: Basic Instincts

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

instincts_h150Instincts are there for a reason, but when it comes to addiction, they get out of whack and can send you spinning out of control.

We all have God-given instincts that revolve around sex, socializing and security. Unfortunately, most addicts overdo all of them. We’ve never had any kind of limitation on any of these instincts, and we run on our own self-will. Like so many addicts, I didn’t believe I had any character defects. If everyone else would just get in line everything would be fine.

The truth is, I did have character defects and every one of them stemmed from these three instincts. Fortunately, around the time I realized this, I was ready for God to help change these areas of my life. Of course, that’s easier said than done. (more…)

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

resistanceIn addiction, resistance is normal so professionals – and family – need to learn how to take it in stride, keeping in mind the ultimate goal: recovery.

When someone is battling an addiction, family and loved ones are usually quicker to advocate seeking help than the addicted person would be. This situation is called “resistance” and it’s one of the hardest issues for professionals to overcome. “The least desirable situation, from the standpoint of evoking change, is for the counselor to advocate for change while the client argues against it,” according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Center (SAMHSA).
