Questions Surround Michael Jackson’s Death

michaeljackson_h150The news that the King of Pop had died at age 50 sent shockwaves around the world and started an extensive investigation into alleged prescription drug abuse.

Less than two weeks after Michael Jackson’s June 25 sudden death, family, friends and fans around the world prepare to say goodbye. But even as the trailblazing singer was being memorialized for his contributions to the world of music, there were more questions than answers about the true cause of death.

A PUBLIC GOODBYE TO MICHAEL JACKSON

Details of the unparalleled public memorial service to be held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center were closely guarded, but last-minute reports had everyone from Michael’s family members as well as A-list stars like Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Mayer and many others in line to perform tributes to the late King of Pop. Harold’s Blog: Basic Instincts

instincts_h150Instincts are there for a reason, but when it comes to addiction, they get out of whack and can send you spinning out of control.

We all have God-given instincts that revolve around sex, socializing and security. Unfortunately, most addicts overdo all of them. We’ve never had any kind of limitation on any of these instincts, and we run on our own self-will. Like so many addicts, I didn’t believe I had any character defects. If everyone else would just get in line everything would be fine.

The truth is, I did have character defects and every one of them stemmed from these three instincts. Fortunately, around the time I realized this, I was ready for God to help change these areas of my life. Of course, that’s easier said than done. (more…)


Resistance to Addiction Treatment

resistanceIn addiction, resistance is normal so professionals – and family – need to learn how to take it in stride, keeping in mind the ultimate goal: recovery.

When someone is battling an addiction, family and loved ones are usually quicker to advocate seeking help than the addicted person would be. This situation is called “resistance” and it’s one of the hardest issues for professionals to overcome. “The least desirable situation, from the standpoint of evoking change, is for the counselor to advocate for change while the client argues against it,” according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Center (SAMHSA).
