Monday, January 25th, 2010

drdrew_w2001VH1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew is back for a third season, again raising the question: Is drug treatment in front of the cameras a viable way to get clean?

A new crew of addicted celebrities is turning to addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky to help them kick the habit – all while VH1’s TV cameras are rolling. This new season features everyone from Mackenzie Phillips and troubled country star Mindy McCready to basketball pro Dennis Rodman and former madam Heidi Fleiss. Upping the drama quotient this time around is the inclusion of Tom Sizemore, Fleiss’ ex-boyfriend who served time for misdemeanor domestic violence against her.

When Fleiss arrives at the treatment center, she’s been living a very isolated existence in Death Valley with a host of parrots she inherited. ketamineWhat is the story behind this eternally popular club drug?

The drug known as ketamine hydrochloride was originally created as an anesthetic for human and veterinary use, but like so many drugs, ways have been found to abuse the substance. In the ‘90s it became popular in clubs, with partygoers using it as an alternative to ecstasy.

Also called “Special K,” the drug belongs to a group classified as “dissociative anesthetics” that includes PCP and nitrous oxide (aka laughing gas). While the drug originally comes in liquid form, it is often cooked into a white powder that recreational users snort. The drug can also be injected into muscle (never a vein, setting it apart from other IV drugs like heroin) for a quicker, more intense high. (more…)
