Addiction Isn’t Ageist

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Rip TornSubstance abuse can happen at any age and senior citizens aren’t immune, as the arrest of Oscar-nominated actor Rip Torn reminds us.

Addiction and substance abuse know no age bounds. This was proven again when 78-year-old actor Rip Torn was arrested recently after allegedly breaking into a Connecticut bank in the town of Salisbury. Following the alleged event, which happened near his Lakeville home, Torn was accused of breaking into the bank with a revolver while intoxicated. After being arraigned on burglary and firearms charges and posting $100,000 bond, the Oscar-nominated actor was released.

Torn is now planning to enter a treatment facility to complete an alcohol addiction program, according to his lawyer, which was a condition of his release set by the judge. (more…)

“Curing” Bad Behavior

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

John MayerTiger Woods and John Mayer are just two celebs who have people talking about the odd trend of seeking out rehab for bad behavior.

Golf great Tiger Woods finally broke his silence on Feb. 19, 2010, with a 14-minute statement during which he apologized and said he was returning to treatment. The question remains, “treatment for what?” Woods carefully couched his references to rehab, saying he was getting help for his problems. Not that he owes it to the public to detail just what those problems are, but that’s a long time to talk without really clearing anything up.

Unlike Woods, singer-songwriter John Mayer isn’t in hot water for infidelity, but at least one Twitter follower suggested he enter rehab to repair his damaged image after comments made during a Playboy interview caused quite a stir. (more…)

SAD and Addiction

Seasonal Affective DisorderSeasonal depression can be dangerous, especially for those with addiction issues.

Who knew there was a most depressing day of the year? Dr. Cliff Arnall, a British researcher from Cardiff University, did. He recently pinpointed Jan. 18 as 2010’s most depressing day. To arrive at this, he factored in everything from post-holiday blahs and debt to failed New Year’s resolutions and the weather.

On the bright side, that means the worst is over because if you’re reading this, you survived that dreaded day. For those suffering from the winter blahs, though, that offers little comfort. (more…)

conrad murrayMichael Jackson’s personal physician faces charges in the pop star’s death, but you don’t have to be a medical professional to be held liable when drugs kill.

As prosecutors in Los Angeles prepare to file charges against Michael Jackson’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, it again raises the debate over who is responsible for the drugs an individual knowingly allows in their system.

Murray has always claimed that Jackson requested or even demanded he administer the powerful anesthetic propofol, in order to help the King of Pop overcome his insomnia. (more…)

Cocaine effects on brainA new study suggests cocaine may not just provide a high but alter the way your brain operates.

“Though we think about our genes mostly in terms of the traits we pass on to our children, they are actually very active in our lives every day, regulating how various cells in our bodies behave,” Time Magazine recently reported. They were talking about a new study that seems to prove the use of cocaine doesn’t just provide a high, it also changes the way your brain functions.
