Experimenting with drugs and alcohol are rights of passage for many kids on college campuses and jocks aren’t immune. While it would seem to make sense that high-level athletes would avoid these behaviors in order to preserve their performance, a recent study published in the Journal of Studies On Alcohol and Drugs proves that isn’t so in every case. Teens and Prescription PillsPrescription misuse among teens is on the rise as drugs are readily available and kids share among their friends.

Law enforcement in Northeast Pennsylvania is seeing the misuse of prescription drugs among juveniles as a growing problem, according to a report in the Scranton Times-Tribune.

Representatives from district attorneys’ offices in three neighboring counties spoke with about 100 educators at the Lackawanna County Center for Public Safety, as part of an ongoing discussion and call to action on gangs and gang-related activity. (more…)

Corey HaimHis family says the troubled child star’s death came at a time when he was seeking help to kick his longtime drug addiction. What went wrong?

Former child actor Corey Haim collapsed March 10, 2010, at the Burbank, Calif. apartment he shared with his mother, who was undergoing cancer treatment. Haim was 38 at the time of his death, and preliminary reports from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office show he had pneumonia, an enlarged heart and water in his lungs. Toxicology reports, due to be released in several weeks, will determine if a drug overdose or drug reaction was to blame for his death. (more…)

Singer Chynna Phillips announced this week that she has entered rehab for anxiety issues, but the former Wilson Phillips singer’s admission has some scratching their heads.

Usually when we hear about a celeb entering treatment, it has to do with drugs or alcohol, but what many may not know is that mental issues often play a role in addiction. (more…)

U.S. Role In Mexican Drug War

mexico drug warOfficials continue to clarify the role of American drug enforcement agents in Mexico as drug-related violence in the region continues to escalate.

A recent Washington Post report that U.S. agents would be embedded with Mexican law enforcement units as part of the ongoing battle against the Mexican drug cartels prompted a statement from Mexico’s interior ministry that reiterated that American drug enforcement agents’ actions would remain limited on Mexican soil.

Unprecedented drug-related violence has led to an increase in anti-drug operations by both the United States and Mexico. (more…)

A drug approved to treat cancer and used to de-worm animals is being added to the nation’s cocaine supply, and public health officials are puzzled as to why it’s happening, according to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal.

On Dec. 18, 2010, the Center for Disease Control released its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) focusing on the devastating effects levamisole can have, including a potentially fatal immune system disorder called agranulocytosis. (more…)

Laws that made it harder to obtain pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in the production of methamphetamine, were successful in cutting down the number of meth labs nationwide, but now those numbers are on the rise again. (more…)

She was a clean-scrubbed cutie when she starred in the remake of Parent Trap, but during her teen years Lindsay Lohan was in the news more frequently for her bad behavior than for her acting or singing work. The petite redhead knows she’s made mistakes in the past and in a recent interview with Britain’s The Sun, Lohan came clean about the drug and alcohol abuse behind her well-publicized problems.

The 23-year-old actress admitted to past problems with “alcohol, cocaine and mind-altering substances,” attributing her trouble in 2007, when she was arrested and entered treatment three separate times, to family problems. (more…)

Afghanistan's Opium ProblemThe drug trade is rampant in Afghanistan – and political — drawing the attention of the American military and hurting locals who get caught up in addiction.

It’s a drug lord’s worst nightmare: tons of raw opium going up in flames, being destroyed in a government-sponsored “drug burn.”

Afghanistan produces more than 90 percent of the world’s opium, with nearly 14 million pounds of the drug produced last year in Afghanistan, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. To put that in perspective, CNN.com reported that, “Earnings from opium make up about a third of the country’s gross domestic product.” (more…)
