Obama Targets Prescription Drug AbuseThe current administration is taking a stand against drug abuse, focusing their attention on issues like drugged driving and prescription addiction.

The growing problem of prescription abuse has a new champion: The Obama administration. In May 2010 the government rolled out a new national drug control strategy. The focus of this new plan is to curb prescription drug abuse, which has grown at an alarming rate in the U.S.

Prescription drug abuse is “America’s fastest growing drug problem, driving significant increases in drug overdoses in recent years,” according to the administration. (more…)


Budget Cuts Put Teens At Risk

Budget Cuts Endanger Teen Drug Prevention ProgramsWhen it comes to teens and drug or alcohol abuse, prevention is possible, but it costs money and now cuts are putting these programs in danger.

State and federal funding have been footing the bill for intervention and prevention programs that help kids stop using drugs or never start in the first place, but budget cuts are placing those programs – and the kids they serve — in danger.

In Washington state, for example, 522 individual schools offer substance abuse programs credited with helping more than 18,180 students last school year, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported. But now a significant share of the state and federal funding that pays for these programs is ending. (more…)


Dennis Hopper: Life After Addiction

Dennis Hopper’s recent passing reminds us there can be life after addiction.

Dennis Hopper made a name for himself in Hollywood by playing weirdoes, misfits and counterculture characters, including a biker in 1969’s Easy Rider. He also played the role of an alcoholic and drug addict in real life, but he kicked his addictions and went on to live a life of recovery until his passing in May 2010 of prostate cancer at the age of 74.

The Kansas native grew up in San Diego, California and was cast in Rebel Without a Cause alongside James Dean while still in his teens. He continued to find roles and show promise, which was realized in Easy Rider, which he not only starred in but co-wrote. (more…)


Babysitter Lights Up, Loses Kid

A recent near miss with a toddler may prove smoking pot isn’t as harmless as some say.

So much for the “legalize pot” folks who say marijuana is harmless. When a three-year-old wandered out onto a highway, her 18-year-old babysitter was arrested for allegedly smoking marijuana while the girl was in her care.

Chelsea Walkingeagle has been charged with felony child neglect for smoking pot with other family members in a garage while the toddler was walking down a busy roadway, according to South Dakota police officials. (more…)


Recovery In the Spotlight

Go-Go’s frontwoman Belinda Carlisle shows how easy it is to hide a relapse when you’re in the public eye.

She was an ‘80s icon, leading the way for other girl groups before launching a successful solo career. But even while Belinda Carlisle was the frontwoman for the bubbly, sugary-sweet band the Go-Go’s, she was battling a drug and alcohol problem. She eventually came clean about her addiction issues and became an outspoken proponent for recovery.

Now, years later, Carlisle admits she was still using at times, even while answering questions in interviews about her long-term sobriety. (more…)
