Drugged Driving

We hear so much about drunk driving, but its drug-related counterpart is just as deadly.

A recent study showed that on any given weekend night one in six drivers tested positive for the presence of drugs, making drugged driving a growing and dangerous problem on our U.S. highways and roads.

Drunk driving has long been recognized as a hazard and championed by groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Meanwhile, driving while under the influence of drugs is just as much of a public health concern, but it gets much less attention. (more…)

Which Drugs Are the Biggest Threat In 2010?

The annual National Drug Threat Assessment report is out, and Mexico, club drugs and prescription abuse all top the list of concerns.

The recently released National Drug Threat Assessment 2010 report is out and it’s pointing the finger at the expanding Mexican drug cartels, growing prescription abuse and Asian ecstasy coming in by way of Canada as some of the biggest threats to sobriety on U.S. soil.

“The trafficking and abuse of drugs affects everyone,” said Michael T. Walther, director of the Justice Department’s National Drug Intelligence Center, which produced the report. “The economic cost alone is estimated at nearly $215 billion annually.” (more…)


Positivity Prevails

A new study shows that scare tactics may have the opposite effect when it comes to teens and drinking.

Parents, educators and professionals are always looking for effective ways to keep kids from drinking. Unfortunately, a new study shows that anti-drinking ads which employ scare tactics or guilt may produce the opposite effect in young people, and can actually increase the likelihood of binge drinking, according to a report on BehavioralHealthCentral.com.

The questionnaire-based study had researchers interviewing 1,200 undergrads after viewing the negative ads. (more…)
