Jamaica is just the latest country making the news in the ongoing war on drugs, but the arrest of Christopher “Dudus” Coke late last month outside Kingston came at a price of more than 70 civilians. Innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire between police, military and those on the wrong side of the law, including rival gangs, during the five-week manhunt that eventually led to his arrest. A debate is raging in England – and around the world – as the head of Britain’s biggest nursing union suggested that heroin be prescribed to users to cut crime and keep public spaces free of dirty needles.

Dr. Peter Carter, general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), proposed that Britain’s National Health Service should offer heroin to drug addicts and open “consumption rooms” where users can go to inject under medical supervision, according The Guardian newspaper. (more…)

Rehab vs. Jail for Lindsay LohanAs the troubled actress is sentenced to jail followed by treatment, the debate rages on over using incarceration as a punishment for the disease of addiction.

The debate continues over the benefits of treatment vs. jail as troubled actress Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail this week for violating her probation following a 2007 drunk driving conviction. The Los Angeles County judge also ordered Lohan to follow her jail time with 90 days in a drug treatment program.

Lohan seemed visibly shaken by the sentence, sobbing and telling the court, “I did do everything that I was told to do and did the best I could,” she said. (more…)
