Even heiresses aren’t immune to drug trouble, as Paris Hilton recently found out not once but twice while traveling overseas. It started earlier this month in South Africa when Hilton ran into a problem while attending the World Cup. She had allegedly been smoking marijuana and was questioned by the South African police before being released and cleared of any wrongdoing.

Now, barely two weeks later, Hilton has been held by police on the French island of Corsica and again pot was the problem. This time, authorities allege that Hilton had less than a gram of marijuana in her purse, according to People magazine. (more…)

Former ‘80s pop star and Wham! frontman George Michael recently ran into trouble with the law again, with alleged substance abuse to blame. The British singer was arrested on July 4 on suspicion of being unfit to drive, according to the BBC.

It’s a familiar story, but why do some stars seem to attract this sort of thing?

Michael has been arrested before. In June 2007 he was banned from driving in his native England for two years after pleading guilty to driving while unfit through drugs. For many, that would have been hitting bottom, but Michael either didn’t get help or has relapsed. (more…)

There are always celebrities battling addiction and there are always celebrities willing to pursue recovery in front of the cameras. So it’s no surprise that a new season of Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew is scheduled to air later this year with a new crop of troubled models, singers, actors and others seeking treatment.

The original supermodel Janice Dickinson will join former Party of Five star Jeremy London along with Rachel Uchitel, best known as one of Tiger Woods’ alleged mistresses. Rounding out the fourth season’s “cast” is former The Hills regular Jason Waller, troubled ‘70s teen idol Leif Garrett, socialite Jason Davis and the mother of singer Keyshia Cole. (more…)

Rehab vs. Jail for Lindsay LohanAs the troubled actress is sentenced to jail followed by treatment, the debate rages on over using incarceration as a punishment for the disease of addiction.

The debate continues over the benefits of treatment vs. jail as troubled actress Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail this week for violating her probation following a 2007 drunk driving conviction. The Los Angeles County judge also ordered Lohan to follow her jail time with 90 days in a drug treatment program.

Lohan seemed visibly shaken by the sentence, sobbing and telling the court, “I did do everything that I was told to do and did the best I could,” she said. (more…)

Paul Gray Dies of Drug OverdoseA drug overdose claims the life of another promising musician.

The coroner’s report is back and it’s official: Addiction has claimed the life of another popular musician. The death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray death can now be blamed on an accidental morphine overdose, according to the Polk County, Iowa, medical examiner.

The 38-year-old Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel room near Des Moines in May 2010, and autopsy results now show he had been dead for several hours before his body was discovered.

According to the toxicology report, Gray had a fatal level of morphine and fentanyl in his system, which caused the accidental overdose. (more…)

Dennis Hopper: Life After Addiction

Dennis Hopper’s recent passing reminds us there can be life after addiction.

Dennis Hopper made a name for himself in Hollywood by playing weirdoes, misfits and counterculture characters, including a biker in 1969’s Easy Rider. He also played the role of an alcoholic and drug addict in real life, but he kicked his addictions and went on to live a life of recovery until his passing in May 2010 of prostate cancer at the age of 74.

The Kansas native grew up in San Diego, California and was cast in Rebel Without a Cause alongside James Dean while still in his teens. He continued to find roles and show promise, which was realized in Easy Rider, which he not only starred in but co-wrote. (more…)

Go-Go’s frontwoman Belinda Carlisle shows how easy it is to hide a relapse when you’re in the public eye.

She was an ‘80s icon, leading the way for other girl groups before launching a successful solo career. But even while Belinda Carlisle was the frontwoman for the bubbly, sugary-sweet band the Go-Go’s, she was battling a drug and alcohol problem. She eventually came clean about her addiction issues and became an outspoken proponent for recovery.

Now, years later, Carlisle admits she was still using at times, even while answering questions in interviews about her long-term sobriety. (more…)

Stopping Doctor ShoppingLaw enforcement is cracking down on the medical professionals who are making prescription abuse a possibility for an ever-increasing number of Americans.

It will take much more than some high-profile arrests to stamp out the growing problem of prescription abuse, but the Los Angeles County coroner’s office is making an effort to go after any medical professionals suspected of providing powerful pain medication to those without legitimate health issues or prescriptions. The latest proof of this is their recent decision to subpoena medical records from 20 doctors in its investigation into actor Corey Haim’s death, a coroner investigator said. (more…)

kelly osbourneKelly Osbourne and other celebs are finding that it’s less acceptable to be fat in Hollywood than it is to battle an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Is it worse to be fat in Hollywood than to be a drug addict?

Maybe. There’s certainly more of a stigma attached to being overweight in a world where looks are everything.

In an US Weekly cover story, reality star and singer Kelly Osbourne recently said, “I took more hell for being fat than I did for being an absolute raging drug addict.”

Osbourne, who has done three stints in treatment for drug and alcohol addiction and recently lost 42 pounds, admits she found her weight issue the harder habit to kick. (more…)

Like Tiger Woods and other troubled celebrities before him, Jesse James has sought professional help by checking himself into a treatment facility, People.com reports.

The scandal that began earlier this month when reports surfaced that James cheated on his wife, recent Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, with as many as four different women. During that time, there has been no mention of an addiction – either a chemical dependency issue or a behavioral issue like sex addiction – until it was reported that James entered treatment.
