Whitney Houston’s Tragic Passing Due to Addiction?

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Whitney Houston’s Tragic Passing Due to Addiction?	Whitney Houston’s history of substance abuse has been strongly implicated as the culprit of her untimely passing.

It was easy to find some of Whitney Houston’s antics funny back in the day. Especially when she was filming her reality show with then-husband Bobby Brown. And when she insisted during an interview with Diane Sawyer that she didn’t do crack, calling it a “cheap” drug and coining the phrase “crack is whack,” we giggled uncomfortably. Maybe we weren’t too worried because we’ve come to expect miraculous comeback stories from Hollywood. We assumed there would be a second act where our beloved pop diva would sober up, grant Oprah a tearful exclusive and a new album would prove all the haters wrong. We knew Whitney had it in her. Pat Sajak’s Drinking Jokes Fall Flat

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Pat Sajak’s Drinking Jokes Fall FlatPat Sajak recently confessed to regularly drinking on the job during the early days of Wheel of Fortune, but his amusing anecdote didn’t tickle everyone’s funny bone.

For most of us, an admission of regularly drinking on the job would be cause for dismissal, but for longtime game show host Pat Sajak, it was just a colorful anecdote.

Sajak, who’s been at the helm of Wheel since 1981, recently admitted in an interview to hosting the show drunk in the past – and on more than one occasion. When talking on ESPN 2’s Dan Le Batard is Highly Questionable, he told stories of how he spent his long dinner breaks back in the show’s early days. Sajak admitted he and letter turner Vanna White would kill time by tossing back margaritas. (more…)

The Alcoholic Brain

Monday, January 30th, 2012

The Alcoholic BrainEver wonder why some people can’t seem to stop drinking? A new study suggests it has more to do with a chemical reaction in the brain and less to do with willpower.

Look around at a bar full of people. How come some can have one or two drinks – or even choose a nonalcoholic option – while others can’t stop drinking until they’re well past the point of intoxication? It’s not because they’re unaware of the health risks, the dangers of driving drunk or the other negative consequences alcohol abuse can cause. Instead, the reason may be because their brains react to alcohol differently. (more…)

Heather Locklear’s Latest Troubles with Substance AbuseThe former Melrose Place star landed in the hospital after reportedly mixing alcohol and prescription painkillers. Is rehab in her future?

Actress Heather Locklear has been in the news lately, but it’s not welcome publicity. The former Melrose Place star landed in a Los Angeles-area hospital after her sister called 911 on January 12. The brief hospitalization was attributed to mixing prescription drugs and alcohol, according to People magazine.

Her parents quickly issued a statement through the hospital that Locklear was in no immediate danger and was healthy, while other sources suggested she was being urged by loved ones to seek treatment. Locklear, 50, has had issues with alcohol in the past, undergoing treatment in 2008 for what her reps classified as “anxiety and depression.” Just months later, she was arrested for DUI in Southern California. Now, many worry that she’s relapsed. People.com recently ran a story that cited sources who claimed the troubled actress was “out of control” in the weeks leading up to the incident. (more…)

Binge Drinking is Becoming a Big Problem

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Binge Drinking is Becoming a Big Problem A new report by the CDC shows that this dangerous practice is more common – and more widespread – than previously thought.

In this day and age, when we have more information than ever before about the dangers of drinking and more help for the problem of substance abuse or alcoholism, it’s surprising to hear that binge drinking is a bigger problem than previously thought.

It’s surprising, but it’s true, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to the new Vital Signs report issued Jan. 12, 2012 from the CDC, more than 38 million U.S. adults binge drink an average of four times a month consuming up to eight drinks at a time, on average. And this dangerous pastime isn’t just the indulgence of the young. While binge drinking is more common among young adults ages 18–34, of those age 65 and older who report binge drinking, they do so more often than their young counterparts – an average of five to six times a month.
