Teen Pot Use Leads to Psychotic Symptoms Later

Teen Pot Use Leads to Psychotic Symptoms LaterA new study points to ongoing issues from early marijuana use.

It’s often thought of as a little harmless experimentation. Everyone does it, right? Even the current and former presidents have admitted to smoking pot. But a new Dutch study shows that smoking marijuana as a teenager or young adult raises your risk of having psychotic symptoms later in life.

Researchers found that those who started smoking pot had double the risk of developing psychotic symptoms, according to a recent report in USA Today.

“This cements much more firmly the reality that marijuana use in adolescence is a risk factor, along with the other genetic, environmental and socioeconomic risk factors, for developing psychosis,” said Dr. Kathryn Kotrla, associate dean and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine in Round Rock. The bill doesn’t make medical marijuana available to just anyone. It clearly spells out which medical conditions would qualify someone for marijuana use, how pharmacies would sell it and how producers and distributors would be licensed. Despite all this, the bill still seems like a long shot when it comes to getting passed, a fact that pleases some lawmakers. (more…)

Marijuana & COPD

Marijuana & COPD Puffing on pot can make you nearly three times more likely to develop the incurable lung disorder COPD.

Marijuana isn’t just hazardous to your health just because it causes distorted perception, memory issues, loss of coordination, increased heart rate and affects brain function. Regularly lighting up can also lead to COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

It turns out that both cigarette and pot smoking can increase a person’s risk COPD almost threefold, but smoking pot alone doesn’t seem to increase the risk of the deadly lung condition, researchers report. (more…)
