We’ve all heard someone joke about their growing Internet addiction (maybe you’ve even said it about yourself), but the relatively new Internet addiction disorder (IAD) is no laughing matter. In fact, it’s becoming a serious mental health issue. With the soaring number of Internet users, the problem of IAD has currently attracted considerable attention from psychiatrists, educators and the public; therefore IAD is becoming a substantial mental health issue around the world. Death by GamingIt makes for a dramatic headline, but people are really dying from their video game addictions, making some question the time they devote to that XBox or Playstation.

It’s a problem parents know all too well. Some children seem glued to their portable video game systems or permanently attached to their console controllers. We joke about these kids being “addicted” and worry over how much video game time is too much. But for a growing number of adults, the problem is real. In what is beginning to be a disturbingly common phenomenon, a young man in Asia recently died due to “prolonged gaming.”

According to Sky News and the AFP, 23 year-old Chen Rong-yu came into a cafe in Taiwan one evening and never left. (more…)

Internet Addiction Mimics Cocaine UseA new study finds that a non-chemical addiction like obsessive Internet use can cause changes to the brain that are similar to those produced by illicit drugs.

The public’s understanding of addiction seems to be growing, with a more general acceptance of the scientific reality that it is a disease, not a personal weakness. At the same time, non-chemical addictions are still more of a mystery. While some are skeptical, studies have shown that gambling, sex, food, even video games or the Internet can produce addictive behaviors. One recent study even found that Internet addiction can change the brain in a way that is similar to the effects of cocaine. (more…)

You can’t turn on the TV news or a morning show without hearing how people are cutting back during the current economic downturn. One story that isn’t getting much coverage, though, is how the recession is helping to create (or exacerbate) a new generation of shopaholics.

Retail Therapy

While many people are cutting their spending during this economic downturn, shopping addicts aren’t cutting up their credit cards. Just as with any other addiction, the harmful behavior escalates during times of stress. So while you’d assume that someone facing a job loss or foreclosure would swear off the mall, those difficulties may cause them to rely on retail therapy even more. (more…)
