Methadone’s Benefits

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

benefits of medical methadoneTaking drugs to help you stop taking drugs may seem counterintuitive, but under an expert’s care it can be the first step back to health.

Most of us connect methadone with recovering heroin addicts, but just what is this drug and how does it work?

A narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine, methadone also reduces withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to heroin or other narcotic drugs. Why trade one drug for another, though? Because methadone weans those who are addicted off of drugs without the “high” heroin or other substances were providing.

Because methadone can work as a pain reliever, it’s a popular choice for addiction detox programs. (more…)

Addictive Errors In Thinking

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

ExcusesWhatever the drug of choice, use often continues – and escalates — because of erroneous thinking that needs to change before true recovery can happen.

Excuses, excuses! We’ve all heard them, and family and friends of those with substance abuse problems are exposed to more than most people. It’s more than just an annoyance, though. It’s a serious problem that those suffering from addiction share.

Addicts Avoiding Help

Below are 10 of the top tactics users employ to avoid getting help. By understanding them, it gives loved ones a glimpse into the deeper issues that lie beneath addiction and it may help them spot a problem earlier. (more…)

September Is Recovery Month

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Recovery MonthRecovery Month shines a light on addiction and substance use issues.

September 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, also known simply as “Recovery Month.” This year’s theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Learn, Together We Heal,” and emphasizes the need to use all available resources, both in our communities and on the Internet, to educate people and their families about substance use disorders. Together as communities, we can better help those struggling with substance use disorders embark on a successful journey of sustained recovery.

Treatment Alumni

Monday, May 4th, 2009

alumniYou’ve graduated from your program. Now what? Plug into recovery resources.

When you complete residential treatment for an addiction there is a well-deserved sense of accomplishment, but the journey is far from over. You may have graduated from full-time treatment, but instead of throwing a tasseled cap into the air, your focus should be on plugging into an “alumni association.”

Post Recovery Options

Some who are new in recovery opt for a sober living house, a place where they can ease back into the “real” world and try out their new freedoms in a regulated environment. For others with jobs or young children waiting, this isn’t an option, but they can still find community in a variety of ways. (more…)

Recovery or Replacement?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Recovery signWhy do some people seem to swap one addiction for another while others experience true recovery? It boils down to getting treatment that really treats.

There’s a joke in recovery circles that if you’re not in at least three 12-Step groups, you’re not really in recovery.

It’s more than just addiction humor. It springs from a truth that many who’ve gone through treatment have already discovered: Once you deal with one issue, other issues begin to come to the surface.

Injury In Recovery

Friday, March 27th, 2009

steve-o dancing with the starsSteve-O is the just the latest in a long line of Dancing With the Stars contenders to suffer an injury. But as a recovering addict, he chose to battle back without pain meds.

When Dancing With the Stars competitor and Jackass star Steve-O comes to mind, he usually inspires a smile. The funnyman was forced to get serious recently, though, when he faced an injury related to his Dancing… appearances: Whether or not to take pain medication for an ongoing back injury.

Interventions, Sober Living and Ballroom Dancing

Steve-O currently resides in a “sober living” house, according to MSNBC. This follows a year of sobriety, inspired in part by an intervention staged by Johnny Knoxville and other friends. Because of his newfound sobriety, Steve-O says he’s forgoing any pain medication to help with his back injury. (more…)

Respect During Recovery

Friday, March 6th, 2009

respectAretha Franklin had it right when she demanded R-E-S-P-E-C-T in her famous song. We need to keep that same tune in mind when interacting with anyone who is dealing with a substance abuse problem.

Televised intervention programs and treatment reality shows can make the process look like a bit of a circus, but in truth, treatment center staff are trained to treat everyone who comes through the doors with respect – and to show family members and others how to do the same.

Emotions are usually running high with all involved by the time someone is approached about seeking treatment for a substance abuse problem. There’s no need to add to that with more drama. Ambushing the person with a problem, running down a laundry list of all they’ve done wrong or bringing up painful family issues in a disrespectful or blaming way will only hinder their ability to accept the help.

The Oscars & Addiction

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Rachel Getting MarriedActress Anne Hathaway’s polished red carpet look for the recent Academy Awards was a far cry from the tearful, troubled recovering addict she portrayed in the film Rachel Getting Married. The role won her a Best Actress nod and brought the issue of addiction to the big screen once again.

Rachel isn’t the first film to shed light on substance abuse, treatment and recovery, though. Trainspotting, When a Man Loves a Woman, The Basketball Diaries, Leaving Las Vegas and a host of other critically-acclaimed movies have explored the complex topic of substance abuse and the devastation it visits not just on those who are addicted but everyone around them.

Rachel Getting Married

This recent film differs from some that have gone before by focusing primarily on the after-effects of addiction as Hathaway’s character tries to find a new role within her family after being released from residential treatment. (more…)

Before You Can Bloom

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

TulipsDoes it seem like you’re not making any progress? Is recovery just not moving fast enough to satisfy you? Trust me, you’re not the only one who feels that way. But before you get too discouraged, take a look outside.

Before spring gives way to all those beautiful blooms- the white crocus, yellow daffodils, pink and red tulips- a lot goes on underground. That foundation work isn’t nearly so pretty to look at. In fact, there’s nothing much to see up here on the surface. But underneath, slowly but surely, the day-to-day work is happening that will eventually lead to that showy spring bouquet. Those bulbs don’t look so pretty in the beginning. They’re weathered, dry and peeling. (more…)

Living in a State of Recovery

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I’m a finisher. I like to get things done and check them off my list. That accomplishment gives me a feeling of intense satisfaction. Maybe that’s why it’s taken me quite a while to grasp the idea that “recovery” is something I’ll never be able to cross off my life’s to-do list. I’ll never be done.

I will always be a work in progress.
