Celebs and others aren’t waiting until they hit bottom before seeking treatment for alcohol or substance abuse issues, but instead they’re getting a head start on recovery.
In the past, celebrities would have to hit bottom before checking out of their lives and careers and checking into treatment. But there seems to be a new trend among celebrities: Seeking help before they see bottom.
David Arquette is the latest to get help before any legal issues or embarrassing TMZ videos surface. The actor has had some personal issues since separating from wife Courteney Cox in October 2010, and an appearance on Howard Stern’s radio show set tongues wagging after he divulged personal details of his marriage and breakup. But it could hardly be seen as a celebrity meltdown. Arquette even publically apologized after the incident, and seemed on good terms with Cox, with whom he has one daughter.
Arquette Entered Addiction Treatment
Still, he entered treatment for alcohol addiction and depression, according to People.com, which his rep confirmed but offered no further information.
Arquette did tell Stern on a follow-up appearance that he was seeing a psychologist regularly and that he believed he was having a “nervous breakdown.” Arquette also confessed he’d been “drinking a lot,” but he later downplayed the comments.
Upon Arquette’s entering rehab, Cox immediately came out in support of her estranged husband, telling People.com, “I really admire David and his choice to take charge and better his life. I love and support him.”
This new trend seems to be a sign that the stigma of addiction and substance abuse is diminishing as individuals – both celebs and regular people – aren’t afraid to ask for help as soon as they see the start of a problem.
