La Paloma Expands
Memphis Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center to Add 50-Bed Residential Unit

La Paloma Treatment Center in Memphis, Tenn., is in the process of a $4 million expansion of its 66-bed facility by adding a 50-bed residential wing. Because the facility runs at 90 percent to 95 percent, it is in need of more space.

La Paloma Bedroom Remodel"There is no shortage of people needing dual diagnosis treatment locally or nationally," Robert Waggener, COO of Foundations Recovery Network, says.

The company chose Looney Ricks Kiss (LRK) to design the three-story, 30,000 square foot addition. The design models the feel of a spa while incorporating the look of the surrounding Glenview Historic District.

"It was crafted to respect the streetscape, respect the neighborhood and the historic character of the campus," Tony Pellicciotti, LRK senior associate and commercial studio director, says. The whole design, he continues, is "organized and conceived to be a high-end spa with a very distinct social mission."

The addition extends from the back of the treatment center to keep a low profile in the neighborhood.

Following the completion of construction, La Paloma will also add a ropes course, sweat lodge, volleyball and basketball courts, and several small cabins to the campus.

La Paloma Chairs RemodelMichael Cartwright, CEO of Foundations Recovery Network, developed his model for dual diagnosis treatment from personal experience with co-occurring disorders. While seeking help for sobriety, Cartwright discovered a gap in the treatment structure through which individuals suffering from mental illness as well as addiction easily slipped through. Once sober, he became passionate about creating an integrated treatment structure for individuals who are dually diagnosed.

In 1995, Michael Cartwright and Bob Nash established Foundations Recovery Network in Nashville, Tenn. Foundations then bought the Methodist Healthcare, Inc. in 1998 to create the La Paloma treatment center in Memphis. In the following years, Nash and Cartwright took on three other facilities in California: The Canyon in Malibu, Calif., Michael's House in Palm Springs, Calif., and Alta Mira in Sausalito, Calif.
